The National Osteorporosis Foundation/World
Health Organization estimates 25 million people have osteoporosis
in the United States and don't know it, with 44.5 million more
at risk, thus earning osteorporosis the title of the "silent
disease." Because there is no cure, prevention is crucial.
That is why the bone densitometry tests are so important.
New drug therapies
are supporting the early diagnosis of osteoporosis. As women
reach 45 years of age, we expect that bone density screening
will become a part of the routine physical, along with the
standard Pap smear.”
A DEXA scan is used specifically
to assess a patient’s risk of fracture by detecting osteoporosis
of the vertebral bodies, which is a thinning of the bones as
we age.
